5th Congress of the Asia-Pacific Hernia Society (APHS)

The 5th Asia Pacific Hernia Congress (APHS) was organized by Indonesian Hernia Society. The local organizing committee was led by Dr. Barlian Sutedja, the President of Indonesian Hernia Society and Dr. Errawan R. Wiradisuria, President of Indonesian Society of Endo-Laparoscopic Surgeons (ISES). Apart from these two organizations the 5th APHS was also strongly supported by The Indonesian Digestive Surgeon Association (IDSA) and the Indonesian Surgeons Association (ISA).

The first day of the meeting on 15 October 2009 was live surgeries that were performed in Jakarta in Gading Pluit hospitals and viewed by the participants of the 5th APHS in the congress venue in Bali. 

Eight surgeries were performed.  Three operating theaters were used in two parallel sessions, Inguinal and Ventral Hernia. The surgery operators were Franz Ugahary (the Netherland), F. Kockerling (Germany), JF. Kukleta (Switzerland), Andy Maleachi (Indonesia), Pradeep K. Chowbey (India), Davide Lomanto (Singapore),  and Anil Sharma (India). After the surgeries all operators flew from Jakarta to Bali and joined the Faculty Welcome Dinner.

Opening Ceremony was held on the 2nd day, 16 October 2009. The 5th APHS was officially open by the President of APHS, President of HIS, President of ISES, IDSA, ISA and also by the General Secretary of European Hernia Society.

The two days symposiums consisted of following sessions:  one key note lecture, 2 lunch symposiums, 6 symposiums, 2 debate sessions, 2 How I do it sessions, 3 meet the experts sessions and 5 free papers session (28 papers). Fifty six faculty members supported the 5th APHS. The APHS Executive Committee meeting was held on 16 Oct 2009 and the General Assembly was held in the afternoon.

On the evening of Friday, 16 October 2009 the Cultural Diner was held in magnificent Cliff hanging café, the Klapa. Participants were entertained with sunset cocktails, Balinese performances and barbeque dinner. During the Cultural Dinner the APHS flag was handed over to South Korea for the 6th APHS 2010. The closing ceremony was held on the Saturday afternoon 17 October 2009. And on Sunday, 18 October 2009 the official one-day tour program was held for the participants and their family visiting the icon destination in Bali. All of the official programs were free for registered participants. 

The 5th APHS was attended by 412 participants and faculty members with following breakdown: Indonesia 220, India 62, PR. China 37, Taiwan 18, France   7, Malaysia 7, Thailand 7, Germany 6, Singapore 6, Italy 5, Pakistan 4, Philippine         4, Australia 3, Japan 3, Korea 3, New Zealand         3, UAE            3, USA            3, Hong Kong  2, Netherland      2, Switzerland 2, Turkey         2, and UK 1.

The 5th APHS was held successfully and for this opportunity the organizing committee would like to thank the Past President of APHS Dr. Pradeep K. Chowbey for his support and leadership, the executive members as well as the founding member of APHS
